CHOOSING YOUR BIRTH PROVIDERS

Expecting families often wonder about the difference between a Doula, Midwife, or Obstetrician (O.B.). While all provide crucial support during pregnancy and birth, their roles are very different.

Doula

A Doula is a trained support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. Some Midwives bring their own Doulas while other Doulas work alone, and you hire them in addition to a Midwife or O.B.

The word “doula” comes from ancient Greek — δοῦλα (doúla) — which literally means “female servant” or “woman who serves.” So the root of the word highlights the idea of someone who is there to serve and support, which is exactly what doulas do in childbirth today.

· Doula Role: Comfort measures, encouragement, reassurance, and helping families feel calm and confident. Assist with the birth plan, breathing techniques, position changes, explaining options, and offering advocacy.

· Types: Birth doulas (support during labor/delivery) and Postpartum doulas (support after birth).

· Location: They provide care at the hospital, at a birthing center, or attend home births.

Doulas are not medical providers. Most do not have training in holistic care or Naturopathy unless they have received additional training.  They do not deliver babies or make medical decisions.

Holistic Doula with Naturopathic Training (what we provide)

Provides the same care as a regular doula along with providing education and support with:

• Fertility preparation, reduces miscarriage rate, strengthens your pregnancy.

• Diet, Herbs, Vitamins & Minerals

• Homeopathics and Flower Remedies

• Massage, Rocktape, Craniosacral Therapy, Reflexology, etc.

• Natural support for common pregnancy problems: Morning Sickness, UTIs, Pain, etc.

• Education on the current medical model of care and natural alternatives.

• Education on home vs hospital birth options.

• Supports you during birth and advocates for the birth plan that you laid out.

• Brings a strong belief that you have the ability to birth your baby without unnecessary interventions.

• Assist with after birth mother care- support healing with natural remedies.

• Natural supplements for nursing and milk supply

• Reduce Post Partum Depression and more!

• Does not replace a Midwife/ O.B. – works alongside.

Midwife

A midwife is a licensed healthcare professional specializing in pregnancy, birth, postpartum care. Their education may be strictly be in the allopathic medical model without any training in Naturopathy. While others have a more natural and holistic approach. Ask your midwife about their training and procedure of care.

• Location: Midwives may work in a hospital setting, birth center, or do home deliveries.

•  Focus: The medical and clinical aspects of pregnancy and birth.

• Medical Training: Midwives provide prenatal care, monitor health, deliver babies, and give postpartum checkups.

•  Types: Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM), Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and traditional/lay midwives.

•  Example: Monitor vitals, catch the baby, provide newborn exams, prescribe treatments.

• Do not perform C-sections or other major surgeries- when needed must transfer to the care of an O.B.

O.B. (Obstetrician / OB-GYN)

An OB is a medical doctor (MD or DO) with specialized training in obstetrics and gynecology. Can manage all types of pregnancies, including high-risk.

· Scope of Practice: Provides prenatal care, manages complications, delivers babies, and offers postpartum care. Trained to perform C-sections and other surgical procedures.

· Location: Almost always hospital-based.

· Is not trained in holistic and Natural Care. Often will advise against it.

· Focus: More medically oriented, more prone to want to induce, prescribe pharmaceuticals, perform medical interventions, and schedule C- sections.
